 Texas License to Carry (LTC) Class

        

       The State of Texas has adopted legislation that allows law abiding citizens to carry handguns for self protection. Obtaining a License to Carry for the State of Texas requires successful completion of a minimum 4 to 6 hour certification course which is outlined by the Texas Department of Public Safety and covers topics on non-violent dispute resolution, Texas laws pertaining to use of force as a defense, use of force, gun safety and gun storage and licensing requirements and laws regulating concealed handgun license holders     

        To obtain a License to Carry in the State of Texas you must qualify with a handgun in accordance with the DPS course of fire, and pass a 25 mutiple choice question exam. A student must then apply to the state and pay the current fees and undergo a complete background check for the state to issue a license.

 

 

Qualifications

To qualify for a Texas LTC you must:

 

  1. Be 21 years old. (Members and former members of the armed forces must be 18.)

  2. Have a clean criminal history, including military service and recent juvenile records.

  3. Not be under a protective order.

  4. Not be chemically dependent.

  5. Not be of unsound mind.

  6. Not be delinquent in paying fines, fees, child support, etc.

  7. Be eligible to purchase a handgun by completing the NICS check.

  8. Complete required training.

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Class

      The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

       This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.

      Students learn NRA’s rules for; safe gun handling, pistol parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, range rules, shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions, cleaning the pistol, and continued opportunities for skill development.

      Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate. 

    This class is a GREAT precursor and prep course for prospective students wanting to pursue a LTC, but not sure if they are proficient enough to pass the LTC shooting qualification. 

 

 
  • What to bring to class:

1) Eye Protection

    You will need to have a pair of clear safety glasses that you bring on your own. Prescription eyewear (glasses)

   are acceptable.

 

2) Ear Protection

    You will need to have either ear plugs or earmuffs that you bring on your own. 

 

3) A Firearm

    You will need to bring to class with you the firearm that you are most comfortable shooting with.  For the             purposes of this class you can bring the firearm of your choice and it can be any caliber size and can be               either a semi-auto or revolver. 

 ~ Firearm must be in good working condition.

 ~ Handguns are subject to inspection by any member of the All Can Carry team prior to training and at any 

    time while on the range. 

 ~ No optical sights allowed. Examples being scopes, lasers or holographics. 

 

4) Ammunition

    You will need to bring 50 rounds of ammunition that are a match to the firearm you will be shooting and             qualifying with. More is recommended, but 50 is the minimal required ammount.

 ~ Reloaded ammunition is not allowed at some ranges. Check with All Can Carry or the scheduled range if that 

    is what you want to shoot with. 

 ~ No aluminum casing

  • Additional Information:

 

~ For the LTC class a written examination and proficiency demonstration will be  administered to each student. 

~ Students must score a minimum 70% on the written examination and 70% on the  shooting proficiency in order          to obtain their license. 

~ Instructions on handling handguns for the shooting proficiency will be provided  during the classroom training. 

   **NOTE** There is NO time allotted for practice or to zero in your handgun during class. You will need to                                       be comfortable with the firearm you bring before arriving to the LTC courses range.

  • What to wear to classes:

 

~ A shirt with a collar, or high cut t-shirt is required. No low cut blouses due to the                danger of hot cartridges falling down your shirts front or back. 

 

~ Long pants required, no shorts or capri style pants. 

 

~ Closed-toed footwear required. Examples being boots or athletic shoes. 

 

 

 

  • Additional Information:

 

~ Holsters will not be permitted to use during the shooting proficiency.

 

~ Handguns must be brought to the range stored in a closed carrying case/bag. 

 

~ Students must abide by all range safety rules. Failure to comply with the safety rules          will result in immediate removal from the range and will result in course failure. 

 

~ No family members, guests or pets will be allowed in the classroom or at the range

   *Service animals excluded.
